Week 4 Updates

The 2024 college football season's fourth week had some significant changes that affected the rankings and the season's possible trajectory. Colorado's thrilling 38-31 victory over Baylor in overtime was a memorable watch. The Buffaloes were led by Shedeur Sanders, who has emerged as a star this season, with a crucial 43-yard Hail Mary to send the game into overtime. Travis Hunter forced a key turnover to seal the game for Colorado's defense in OT. This game was Colorado’s first conference game since returning to the BIG-12.

In other news, Texas, ranked No. 1, completely dominated Louisiana-Monroe with a 51-3 victory. Freshman quarterback Arch Manning delivered an impressive performance in his first collegiate start, throwing for multiple touchdowns and leading the Longhorns like a veteran. Texas is making a strong case for a playoff spot, and Manning’s debut has sparked excitement about his future, but QB, Quinn Ewers, is expected to start next week.

No. 6 Tennessee went to Norman, Oklahoma to take on No. 15 Oklahoma in a critical matchup and came away with a solid 25-15 win. This victory was especially sweet for Tennessee’s coach, Josh Heupel, who returned to face his former team in Norman. Tennessee’s defense played a key role in the win and held a very talented and hyped-up Oklahoma offense to only 15 points.

In the Big Ten, Michigan edged USC 27-24 in USC’s Big Ten debut. This win was crucial for Michigan, as they continue their pursuit of the Big Ten championship. Their offense was dominant for the majority of the game, until their defense made a game saving stop in what would be USC’s last drive. USC looks to bounce back in another Big Ten matchup next week against Wisconsin.

No. 12 Utah also secured a significant win, defeating No. 14 Oklahoma State 22-19. Utah showed they were the better team for most of the game until Oklahoma State attempted a comeback late in the fourth quarter. Utah held on as they remain undefeated. This victory also keeps Utah’s playoff hopes alive as they push for a spot in the top 10.

Meanwhile, Clemson, ranked No. 21, beat NC State in a high scoring affair, which ended up being 59-35. Clemson’s offense was unstoppable, piling up yards and points, and showing why they remain a threat in the ACC, but their defense still remains questionable.
